As an independent insurance agency for over 19 years, the biggest problem we see every day is folks who buy an insurance policy and have little or no idea of what they are paying for. There are few unplanned events you can experience in your lifetime that can have a greater impact on your finances than a health crisis. The cost of your car or even your house is, in many cases, small compared to the bills you’ll get after a stay in the hospital.
Whether you are shopping for an individual policy, deciding which plan option to choose at work or an employer offering health insurance to your employees, it is essential that you have a basic understanding of what you are getting. Our goal is for our clients have enough information to make an informed decision.
We don’t have to tell you that the insurance companies seem to hold all the cards and in fact, they pretty much do. The best way to get the most from your health insurance plan is to understand how your policy works. Your insurance agent, human resource department or current insurance company’s customer service gets paid to help you – make them work for their money! If you aren’t clear about what you have or what your options are, keep asking questions until you are satisfied you have enough information. Even if your employer offers only one plan and you have no choice, it is important that you understand what your share of the costs can be if something happens so you can be prepared.
